Replying to Recent WTFery Online Comments Regarding Meghan. Let’s start this advisory with the main message: STOP PUTTING MEGHAN MARKLE IN A BOX. What box, you ask? If you’re unaware, there are ‘gatekeepers’ and identity police who regularly insert themselves into Meghan’s, Sussex Squad’s and, or Meghan supporters’ lane for…well, not even sure why.
It’s been percolating for a while but most recently, after dealing with Emily Giffin’s toxicity, the moles burrowed to the surface and nudged their noses against the artificial boxes for race, gender, profession and probably more that went unnoticed. By so doing, they inserted their stance into ongoing online discussions to condemn, criticize, or sow confusion about Meghan and or the Sussex Squad. It’s interesting to watch the dance unfold as the manipulative commenters dip in with prejudicial (not specifically about race) commentary or pretend to soft-shoe their passive-aggressive question into a gotcha moment.
So, the latest batch of WTF commentary, included: Meghan is “60% white.” Why should she be supported by black women? Or What has Meghan done for black people that she should be supported by black people? Or since Meghan doesn’t embrace her blackness by wearing her hair straight, why should black women support her? Or Meghan is an actress. She knows how to look sad, be coy, get sympathy. She’s manipulating people.
It’s tomfoolery to the highest degree.
First, have these pot stirrers ever heard of humanity, right, wrong, principle or fairness? The mere fact that they pose these questions tells us all we need to know about them. I pray that, when their time comes, their hard-heartedness is not rewarded in kind. Also who died and made you lord of what or who black people decide to support and why? I don’t recall your opinion being sought. Notwithstanding the fallacy of your conclusion, how Meghan and for that matter any woman wears her hair, is her choice and no one cares if you question. Next time, please check your impudence at the door, before you approach. Before you judge who Meghan is by what job she did, recognize the hypocrisy of your support for other artists/ public figures.
Sussex Squad
The Squad is known to call out the unfairness of media coverage, challenge the trolls, uplift Meghan’s accomplishments, and promote her charitable interests. Asking the Squad to answer personal, introspective questions about Meghan (some of which are already answered on the record), is duplicitous in presentation while destructive with its intention, by forcing the Squad to justify supporting Meghan or justify why they participate in or support this space.
Sussex Squad supports Meghan for a variety of reasons because the squad is made up of a variety of people with wide ranging circumstances and life experiences. The only common factor is supporting Meghan. It is a network, a shared space of solidarity around an individual. For some that also includes Harry and Archie. But it’s not a monolith with one viewpoint. And therefore, acting like you’re holding a mic to the Sussex Squad to answer these questions is pointless. No one needs your permission to support Meghan and no supporter is required to justify their stance to anyone. If this community is a space that your spirit cannot inhabit, you have free will. See yourself out. No announcements necessary.
Let’s be clear—
If you need receipts, DNA information, and blood oaths to verify Meghan’s inclusion or loyalty to a social/racial construct, then you hold onto that baggage. Your support isn’t warranted or missed.
If you need to hold onto to problematic assumptions about identity in order to align yourself with Meghan, you will not be missed.
If you need to erect a hurdle about authenticity and integrity because she’s an actress, that somehow isn’t used as a weapon for the Meryl Streeps, Cate Blanchetts, and Emma Stones of the acting profession, then please sit this out…for good.
The Squad is not a religion looking to convert the masses. But it also isn’t bending a knee for anyone’s blessing on how and if to celebrate Meghan and her family. Take that F*ery elsewhere and get out of our way.
