Replying to Recent WTFery Online Comments Regarding Meghan. Let’s start this advisory with the main message: STOP PUTTING MEGHAN MARKLE IN A BOX. What box, you ask? If you’re unaware, there are ‘gatekeepers’ and identity police who regularly insert themselves into Meghan’s, Sussex Squad’s and, or Meghan supporters’ lane for…well, not even sure why.

It’s been percolating for a while but most recently, after dealing with Emily Giffin’s toxicity, the moles burrowed to the surface and nudged their noses against the artificial boxes for race, gender, profession and probably more that went unnoticed. By so doing, they inserted their stance into ongoing online discussions to condemn, criticize, or sow confusion about Meghan and or the Sussex Squad. It’s interesting to watch the dance unfold as the manipulative commenters dip in with prejudicial (not specifically about race) commentary or pretend to soft-shoe their passive-aggressive question into a gotcha moment.

So, the latest batch of WTF commentary, included: Meghan is “60% white.” Why should she be supported by black women? Or What has Meghan done for black people that she should be supported by black people? Or since Meghan doesn’t embrace her blackness by wearing her hair straight, why should black women support her? Or Meghan is an actress. She knows how to look sad, be coy, get sympathy. She’s manipulating people.
It’s tomfoolery to the highest degree.

First, have these pot stirrers ever heard of humanity, right, wrong, principle or fairness? The mere fact that they pose these questions tells us all we need to know about them. I pray that, when their time comes, their hard-heartedness is not rewarded in kind. Also who died and made you lord of what or who black people decide to support and why? I don’t recall your opinion being sought. Notwithstanding the fallacy of your conclusion, how Meghan and for that matter any woman wears her hair, is her choice and no one cares if you question. Next time, please check your impudence at the door, before you approach. Before you judge who Meghan is by what job she did, recognize the hypocrisy of your support for other artists/ public figures.

Sussex Squad

The Squad is known to call out the unfairness of media coverage, challenge the trolls, uplift Meghan’s accomplishments, and promote her charitable interests. Asking the Squad to answer personal, introspective questions about Meghan (some of which are already answered on the record), is duplicitous in presentation while destructive with its intention, by forcing the Squad to justify supporting Meghan or justify why they participate in or support this space.

Sussex Squad supports Meghan for a variety of reasons because the squad is made up of a variety of people with wide ranging circumstances and life experiences. The only common factor is supporting Meghan. It is a network, a shared space of solidarity around an individual. For some that also includes Harry and Archie. But it’s not a monolith with one viewpoint. And therefore, acting like you’re holding a mic to the Sussex Squad to answer these questions is pointless. No one needs your permission to support Meghan and no supporter is required to justify their stance to anyone. If this community is a space that your spirit cannot inhabit, you have free will. See yourself out. No announcements necessary.

Let’s be clear—

If you need receipts, DNA information, and blood oaths to verify Meghan’s inclusion or loyalty to a social/racial construct, then you hold onto that baggage. Your support isn’t warranted or missed.

If you need to hold onto to problematic assumptions about identity in order to align yourself with Meghan, you will not be missed.

If you need to erect a hurdle about authenticity and integrity because she’s an actress, that somehow isn’t used as a weapon for the Meryl Streeps, Cate Blanchetts, and Emma Stones of the acting profession, then please sit this out…for good.

The Squad is not a religion looking to convert the masses. But it also isn’t bending a knee for anyone’s blessing on how and if to celebrate Meghan and her family. Take that F*ery elsewhere and get out of our way.

Interesting thing about the is she black enough or what has she done for the black community is that a lot of black people on platforms I used to enjoy say that. I have to ask Americans what does it mean to do something for black people specifically because even Obama didn’t do anything for the black community. It’s strange watching it from Africa. Meghan on the Suits social media page answered a fan who said she’s not black with ‘My mother and I would disagree with you’ Her blood is biracial why is that a bad thing to say? Can black people explain?

    1. Mich Monk

      Hi Vixxo,

I think we can all come up with reasons for the points of view, but in reality, the only people to give you their perspectives are the ones who made the comments. And we know they aren’t going to put themselves out there to share their prejudices, fears, or misconceptions.

But my point was to let these skewed thinkers know that the Sussex Squad space is not their “safe” space. It will be called out for the ridiculous nonsense that it is.

  2. Elizabeth Badu

Once again excellent article, you ‘ ve said it all, there’s nothing to add, secondly thanks Jose for giving us a different perspective, it also gave me food for thought merci to you both

  3. Aussie Fan

Well said, a powerful response to the continued trolling!
Just one little edit …it’s Cate Blanchett, not Kate, as in Middleton! 🤣 ( Aussie here!)

    1. Mich Monk

      Hi Aussie Fan,

LOL, thanks for the head’s up on Cate. And I love Cate Blanchett – so I mean no disrespect when referencing her name.

      All the best,

  4. Conie

As always your article is well written and thanks for that. Both Joyce & José have said all I want to say.GOOD SOOOO!!!!! .

    1. Mich Monk

      Thank you, Conie

I appreciate your taking the time to read and comment.

      Have a great week!

  5. JOSÉ SMART

Thank you Mitch for this article addressing an important question. I asked myself the same thing: the rational behind the support of Meghan Markle by a wide range of people around the world irrespective of their ethnicity (the writer Hilary Mantel, the actor Brian Cox, the 70 women of Uk MPs, Hillary Clinton… are not black).

Meghan is “60% white.” Why should she be supported by black women? Or What has Meghan done for black people that she should be supported by black people?
I don’t necessarily see that question as a bad or irrelevant question. We can provide some answers.
People like Hilary Clinton, Brian Cox support Meghan based on ideas of “humanity, right, wrong, principle or fairness.“
Some other ones for her black ancestry because it is viewed as being at the core of her vilification. Different reasons not mutually exclusive and should not alienate her non-black supporters.

The fact that people bring up the 60 % of Meghan’s whiteness vs. her 40% of blackness is part of the old trick of divide and conquer.
We could also ask the same question to the haters: Meghan being 60% white, why isn’t it enough for numerous whites women to embrace her? What has she done against White people and white women that they would hate her so much by coordinating a smear campaign against her especially during her pregnancy and comparing her baby to a monkey or someone with Down Syndrome?
The 40% of sub-Saharan African ancestry for which Meghan had been rejected and doom inferior to be part of the white British Royal family is the very reason why some supporters identify with her, cry with and for her. The Duchess of Sussex did everything humanly possible to demonstrate her competence, her expertise and dedication to her new role as a member of the royal family. It was never good enough. We all know that the reasons behind the persecution of Meghan stemmed from the one-drop rule and the black code.
Is she perfect or an angel? Did she make some decisions to fit and be accepted by the dominant culture and Hollywood? Maybe. But who are we to condemn her?
And besides, she is just 38 year old and her acting career took off 6 years before marrying Harry. What did we expect her to do financially, politically, and culturally for black people or black women? She only became a global figure 2 years ago.
There are plenty of black prominent people including some billionaires who have been around, have acquired a great fortune and cemented themselves in their fields. Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Michael Jordan, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Beyoncé, Serena Williams, just to name a few… At this stage of her life, our only hope for Meghan is to cement her marriage by having one or two more kids and cherish her husband who left UK to protect her and their child. When she is ready and sees fit, she will add other charitable endeavors to her platform included those pertaining to black people in the USA. She had already visited women in Rwanda and South Africa…
Why are people outraged and want justice for Armaud Arbery, Botham Jean and Breonna Taylo, Trayvon Martin, Rodney King…? Because, they didn’t deserve their fate. Meghan does not deserve to be mistreated by the British/Australian/Canadian media and the British monarchy.

    1. Joyce

Jose, thank you so much for your perspective on this discussion, I applaud your well documented analysis of why those questioning the need to support this couple especially Meghan. You said it and I pray that God bless them with additional child/children to cement their union and protect them from all evils in Jesus name. Amen.

    2. Mich Monk

      Hi Jose

Thank you for your insight. The questions used in the write up were a sample of comments and I used them without mentioning the contextual reference of who (gender/ethnicity) said what or the progression of the online discussion that revealed further information. Also I noted that sometimes a responder couldn’t articulate an answer that would definitely shut down the aggressor. Hence, my desire to address it in a general manner. I didn’t attempt to address the psychology behind their comments because that is outside of my wheelhouse and I’d be making presumptions.

So I stuck to the point that “we” see and understand what is trying to be done with these types of questions and it won’t deter our support.

  6. JOY

I SINCERLY BELIEVE GOD ALMIGHTY IS WORKING OUT HIS DIVINE PLAN, PURPOSE AND WILL IM HARRY & MEGHAN’S LIFE. MANY OF US HAVE PRAYED AND WITNESSED HIS DIVINE GRACE, MERCY, FAVOR AND PROTECTION.IN HSRRY & MEGHAN’S LIFE. HE IS NOT FINISHED, HE IS JUST GETTING STARTED. ONE COMMENTER ANGRILY REPLIED TO ONE OF MY REPONSES, HE ASKED,” DID YOU THINK WE WOULD ACCEPT HER IN THE ROYAL FAMILY? WHEN I TOLD HIM, IT WAS NOT HIS DECISION TO ACCEPT HER, BUT GOD ALMIGHTY’S DIVINE WILL, HE NEVER RESPONDED IN KIND. THIS IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THE DESIRES OF MANKIND. REMEMBER, THE ENEMY OF OUR S P ULS ALWAYS ATTACKS AND COMES AGAINST WHAT IS GOOD, RIGHTEOUS AND HOLY. HARRY & MEGHAM SYMBOLIZES LOVE, KINDNESS, COMPASSION, GENEROSITY, COMMITTMENT IN MARRIAGE. ETC. MSNY PEOPLE IS/ARE WSTCHING THEIR GENUINE LOVE FOR EACH OTHER, AND THEY ARE EXPERIENCING RENEWED HOPE AND FAITH IN THE INSTITUTION OF MARRIAGE. YTHE ENEMY HAS LSUNCHES A STRSTEGIC ATTACK AGAINST THIS COUPLE. JOWEVER, GOD ALMIGHTY HAS RAISED UP THOSE WHO WOULD GSTHER AROUND THIS COUPLE/FAMILY TO UNDERGIRD THEM, TO STRENGTHEN, AND SUPPORT THEM. YES, THE ENEMY USES PEOPLE TO PERFORM HIS EVIL THROUGH. HOWEVER, GOD ALMIGHTY MANIFESTS HIS DIVINE FAVOR, GRACE, WISDOM, SUPPORT AND BLESSINGS THROUGH PEOPLE. THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT HARRY & MEGHAN WILL SOSR WITH THE EAGLES, THEY SHALL PREVAIL AND EMERGE STRONGER, WITH A ROCK SOLID FOUNDATION OF MUTUAL LOVE, RESPECT, FAITH, HOPE AND JOY. THEY SHALL PREVAIL. LIKE A PHOENIX FROM THE ASHES, THEY SHALL RISE VICTORIOUSLY. I AM PRAYING FOR THEM, THERE IS TREMENDOUS POWER IN PRAYER, WILL YOU JOIN ME?? LOVE & PEACE TO ALL🙏💖💖

    1. Mich Monk

      Hi Joy

Thank you for sharing your faith and positive words for this blessed couple.

  7. Rose

I especially liked your second last paragraph. Idiots have held the fact that Meghan was an actress against her for a long time, witness the idiocy of Emily Giffin lately. I have often wondered if these people have ever turned on a show on TV, gone to a movie, Went to see a play etc. Those are all actors! Nobody is their job. Everybody goes to work and leaves work, and has a life outside work. Why is it that they think Meghan is an actress 24/7?

Colour on colour racism is one of the saddest things. How does one even come to the conclusion that somebody is 60% of something? As your article suggests people ought to concentrate more on humanity, than the shade of one’s skin, or how they wear their hair.

    1. Mich Monk

      Hi Rose,

Thank you for sharing your appreciation. When I first saw the “60% white,” it shocked me. I’d never heard of anyone referring to Meghan in such a manner. It stuck with me because the woman was upset at her being called a black woman or being supported by black women—not quite sure what was her point.

I also think that a lot of these comments are helped by the social media space where making ridiculous remarks is easy and come with little consequence. But I wanted the Squad to know that they don’t have to twist themselves into knots trying to respond to these people.

  8. Kathy Brewer

    Mich,

Thank you for such a well written response/statement. It is sad that unhapoy and or angry people want everyobe ekse to be miserable haters like themselves. They have no right to judge others! That is God’s job snd He is perfectly capable of Handling His job. What a waster of time spending it trying to run other peoples lives. Sad and futile.

    1. Mich Monk

      HI Kathy

I agree completely. It’s why I don’t spend too much time online because, as you say–“unhappy and/or angry people” would rather spend their time tearing down someone else than dealing with their own miserable lives.

I find joy in supporting Harry and Meghan and sharing the space with other supporters.

      Onward and upward.

  9. Sunshine

Thank you for this fantastic article. I do not believe it’s black women predominantly with the issue. These are often white women with black avatars. We’ve seen The struggles of countless of mixed-race black people in many professions who are in the public. They have our support, but not the support of their other 50%.

    1. Mich Monk

      Hi Sunshine,

Thank you for your comments. Some comments I didn’t specify the race, but one commenter has a following as a black female business owner or something publicity related (she wasn’t anyone with any real clout). But these were a sample of comments to highlight the types of discussions anti-Meghan supporters try to have with the Squad, but it’s not working to destroy our collective strength.

  10. Colleen DaCosta

Thanks for the article. People need to find constructive things to do with their lives. Leave Megan alone. Let’s get a list of what they are doing for their Country with this virus going on. Meghan and Harry are going out doing positive things for the community they live in. We love having them here in America because you didn’t want them in England. Have a blessed life, let go and let God.

    1. Mich Monk

      Hi Colleen,

      You’re so right.
It takes energy to be so hateful and distressed about someone they have never met and who has done nothing to them. Sucks their soul dry.

But we’ll keep moving on and joyfully supporting them.

  11. Airat

Mich Monk, great reinforcement. I call this article that because it expanded the point of my argument with one of the nasties on Twitter just a few days ago: l expressed that myself and others felt the need to come to the support of Meghan as she was being bullied by those whose aim was for her to fade into oblivion. I explained to this moron that it was simply fair practice to support a fellow human being in that position.
Why would you watch and applaud when a person is being bashed for her skin tone and justify your insensitivity because you also felt she was biracial…not black enough.
We need to remind our fellow black sisters that being mean is not synonymous with being realistic or whatever it is they think they are conveying by expressing such a perception . It is simply cruelty without accessories. . My thoughts.

    1. Laura Filmore-Berry

WELL SAID JOYCE, JEALOUSY & CRUELTY GETS US NOWHERE, BUT, LOVING KINDNESS & SUPPORT GETS US EVERYWHERE. THESE DAYS, IT REALLY DOES NOT MATTER WHAT RACE, CREED, OR COLOR A WOMAN IS, SHE IS AUTOMATICALLY, JUDGED, MISUSED AND ABUSED. WE BASICALLY NEED TO STAND UP & SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER… GOD HAS THE FINAL SAYING IN ALL OF OUR LIVES. TREASURE, LOVE & SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER WHILE WE HAVE A CHANCE. I LOVE HARRY & MEGHAN & THEIR PRECIOUS BUNDLE OF JOY… WISHING THEM MUCH SUCCESS !!! MUCH LOVE TO EVERYONE… THANK YOU … GOD BLESS !!!

    2. Kathy Brewer

Airat, what difference does the color if our skin? People are people and everyone deserves kindness, tespect and to believed the best of.

    3. Mich Monk

      Hi Airat,

Sorry to hear that you dealt with this first hand. I know that we will continue to see this type of aggression but, yes, I hope that this bit of reinforcement will help give a boost to the Squad.

We are united with uplifting Meghan, Harry and Archie.

  12. Gladys

Well said Joyce, its indeed a crab mentality, Jezz there is so much jealousy, wonder what happens to empathy, humanity & kindness if everything is seen through colour!!??

  13. Joyce

Thank you Mich for this masterpiece, I am fed up with some black people who want to hold unwarranted sense of entitlement to so called blackness. It is exhausting , retrogressive and ugly, and I see it as a form of bullying to their fellow human being . Every individual who has conscience can see the way Meghan was being hounded and to some extent, I will now say these self proclaimed custodian of blackness are part of the bullying for self satisfaction. We support Meghan for what she stands for and what she has had to put up with all her life and she has shown that, in spite of all, she maintained her dignity and self esteem with her husband. My issue with those asking what has she done for black people ? My reply is what do they want her to do specifically for black people? why do they want a handout? This was the same nonsense some said about Obama & Michelle and some still saying he did nothing for black people. The mere fact that these people have worked hard to get to where they are is enough for people to say we look up to them for inspiration and that you can be yourself and pull through any difficulties you face through hard work
The jealousy and envy clouds the judgement of these group of people who have crab mentality, no one is asking for their support of Meghan, they can continue to support other actors and actresses who they deem fit and could give them what they want. I have no energy for people who are myopic in their thinking and of no value to the agenda, I do hope when they have to be in Meghan’s shoes they absorb such tirade of bullying without complaint and not ask for support or sympathy.
The issue of how people wear their hair is nobody’s business and not sure who appointed these people as hair police, they should get a life and deal with their insecurity and self pity. Meghan”s support is across the globe so the insignificant noisy few is not welcomed and they are advised to go to who they have allegiance and not disturb other well meaning people’s sanity and peace.

    1. Gladys

Well daid Joyce, its indeed a crab mentality, Jezz there is so much jealousy, wonder what happens to empathy, humanity & kindness if everything is seen through colour!!??

    2. Mich Monk

      Hi Joyce,

      THANK YOU!

There is a boldness to the blind ignorance that shows people are missing the point. They are missing what really matters and what should be the real take away with how Meghan has dealt with this traumatic episode with dignity and consistent forward-facing attitude.

If nothing else, they can celebrate her strength. But miserable folks can have the hardest time being joyful for others.

Oh well, I’m also happy to leave the crabs in the barrel.

  14. Deborah Fraser

First and foremost from the time of her very existence in this world Meghan was,is or will never be the problem or issue. For those who sought to point those questions to others and not to themselves are severly disturbed. It is a reflection of their inner turmoil and insecurities. These are the people who come into the lives of children and persecute them, based on the questions they posted. Thus traumatizing these kids for life. Meghan does not have to apologise for who she is to no one. I dare anyone to declare that she is not a child of God just like themselves. I dare them to declare themselves perfect, because they are not. I dare them to say that she is making their lives a misery. I dare them to say that she does not belong to the human race. I find it very insulting for them to question us about why we support Her and her family. Why should we watch a fellow human just like us be lynched verbally and psychologically because who she is in physical appearance, biologically or other wise. How dare they. It is people like those who have all these vile questions that neo Nazis, and supremist groups live and breathe. It is people like these that have these questions which allow ethic cleansing to take place globally. We have historical facts and not opinions. It is warped thinking which serves as the bedrock for eugenics. I will not apologise for being a supporter of Meghan and her family and I do not apologise for doing so. I rest my case. I want to thank the author for bringing this atrocious, nonsensical, and clearly disturbing issue to light. Clearly the mindset of many with such questions need to visit their inner turmoil and insecurities and seek professional help. We the Sussexsquaddies are not your vaccine in your pandemic of a disease called Hatred. Again to the author, I thank you for this written piece

    1. Gladys

Yes, Deborah Fraser so on point, lots of complexes & insecurities with this group of people.

    2. Mich Monk

      Hi Deborah,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and wonderful insight. I agree heartily.

Since some supporters are online more than others, I wanted to let them know that we are aware of the types of discussions that come their way. And regardless of these hateful people’s attempt to criticize the Squad, we are even more united behind Meghan, Harry and Archie.

  15. Gladys

Umm So these people are not denying where their hate stems from!! & what idiotic questions they do ask!? the thing is that, these people are not only Insane but indeed very very Evil.
so after seeing that their long time campaign by mocking, abusing, bullying & belittling has garnered her support & sympathy worldwide & it continues, so they’re now searching for a way to dismantle us sane surporters with their bs, the point is we support Meghan not because of her blackness/ whiteness, but do so because of the qualities she possesses & we’re of many different shades but united in doing & being good, & by that we see you insane haters👀👎
Before these commentators continue with their hate campaighn they should maybe analyse the person they want to hate so much from inside, but maybe they can’t as their hate stems from their own insecurities, jealousies & envy.

Thanks Mich Monk, its really a great article.

    1. Mich Monk

      Hi Gladys,

I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment on the article. I completely agree with you.

Meghan, Harry, and Archie having a growing line of supporters is messing with these hateful people’s minds. And the critics who think they are being intellectual about why we shouldn’t support Meghan are missing the point that what happened here is bigger than their fears, jealousies, and insecurities.

      Onward and upward

  16. Sula

Great article, thanks for taking the time to write it. Unfortunately being of mixed race or light skin has always been an issue for some people. Meghan is secure in who she is and she and has said that on many occasions. I support Harry and Meghan because of who they are. Meghan being a woman of POC is just a bonus.

    1. Mich Monk

      Hi Sula,

It’s such a complex issue to drill down into coherent bits because everyone comes to the issue with their own lens and of course, experience. But at the heart of my message is that her bi/multi-ethnicity shouldn’t be the barometer used to decide whether it’s worthy to support or not.

Thank you for reading and commenting. And I heartily agree with your sentiment: “I support Harry and Meghan because of who they are.”

      All the best

      1. Toya

Wonderful articles. More true love statements about lovely Meghan than haters’ statements.

  17. Jacqueline Jean-Francois

Let me quote India Arie for a minute.
Meghan is not her hair, she is not this skin nor is she your expectations. There is a soul that live inside of her. Questioning her blackness is your problem not hers. She is free to live her life as she sees fit. The Sussex squad does not borrow from anyone so we support who we want to free and clear.
The Sussex squad and Meghan do not have the inclination nor the time to fulfill your fantasies of what you think their lives should be so go elsewhere and continue to live your wasted life in hate.
