During a tour of the kitchen, the Duchess said: “I have an idea. “I saw this project this woman had started somewhere in the States on a school lunch programme. On each of the bananas she wrote an affirmation, to make the kids feel really, like, empowered. “It was the most incredible idea – this small gesture. • Duchess participated in an interactive workshop, where she met scholars, academics, ACU staff, learned more about the main ‘areas of work’ the ACU focuses on.
• She visited six groups: Access and Inclusion -Disabilities, Access and Inclusion-Gender, Sustainability, Peace and Reconciliation, Refugees, and ACU Staff.
• In the Access and Inclusion – Disabilities group the Duchess met in person Ms Mayamiko Chibowa, who is a Chevening Scholar from Malawi, studying SEN Disability and Inclusive Education at the University of Roehampton.
• The Duchess was able to converse with the three other participants in the Access and Inclusion- Disabilities group via Skype. Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarship recipients Mr Hilary Harawo, Mr Ntani Nsutebu and Mr Almachius Rwegasira Hilary, who are studying in Ghana, were able to discuss their work with the Duchess.
• The Duchess met & discussed the work of the ACU’s Peace & Reconciliation Network with academics & Commonwealth Scholars in the Peace & Reconciliation group. She met Commonwealth PhD Scholar Ishrat Hossain (a Bangladeshi) who discussed her research with the Duchess.
• The Duchess also met Logan Brown, a Marshall Scholar studying Terrorism, Security and Society at King’s College London in the Peace & Reconciliation group. Ms. Brown gifted the Duchess the children’s book Denali Dreams, which she authored.
• In the Refugee group the Duchess met an academic & Commonwealth Scholars. One of whom was Marshall Scholar Devika Ranjan (an American), who is studying Applied Theatre at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London.
