Just because you’re heading to Texas doesn’t mean you need to rush out and buy a pair of Daisy Dukes or cowboy boots. Nor do you have to throw on a ball gown or start curling your hair like a debutante—in fact, Texas is the best of both worlds— casual, yet polished – relaxed, yet styled. Here’s your quintessential packing guide for your next Southern jaunt. Yee to the haw!

1. ALL BUTTONED UP

You can’t head to Dallas without a crisp collared button down, but this is still Texas, so don’t play it safe in plain ol’ white version—we want to see colors, patterns, and embellishments wherever possible.

2. ROCK THOSE MOM JEANS

The ’80s made their mark on Texan fashion—and that Working Girl vibe has never really left the place. So instead of teasing your hair or sporting some shoulder pads, try a pair of easy high-waisted jeans. That way, you’re giving a little nod to the ostentatious era without going overboard.

3. ON THE FRINGE

Fringe has been associated with western wear forever—but today’s versions are more high-fashion and less on-the-ranch. Since fringe jackets can seem a touch out of place in many cities—Dallas gives you your chance to flaunt that fringe.

4. GARDEN PARTY

Whether you’re a real Southern Belle or you just want to pretend for a day, you’ll have to start with a) a dress and b) something with a feminine print, preferably florals. Pick a flattering knee-length dress that nips in the waist and isn’t overly saccharine (no bubblegum pink here).

5. THESE BOOTS WERE MADE FOR WALKIN’

Legit cowboy boots might be a little bit too authentic for the faint of heart, so bring along your fave pair of ankle booties with a wee heel so you’ll still fit right in.

6. KICK THE BUCKET

There’s nothing worse than trying to figure out which purse to bring when you’re traveling to a new city, but a bucket bag is chic, the perfect size for a carry-on or a day bag while you’re hiking the Katy Trail or heading to Knife for dinner.
